Discrimination in job search – how an anonymous profile helps
An anonymous profile helps because a company does not see your name or photo the first time it looks at your profile. It looks at your trade, experience, permits and availability. It does not remove discrimination, but the first look is not based on a name or a photo.
What the law says
The Finnish Non-discrimination Act bans discrimination in recruitment too. A job seeker must not be discriminated against because of, for example, age, origin, language, religion, disability or state of health.
What Emploi hides
Your name, photo and contact details do not show while companies browse profiles. A name and a photo can tell a reader things that should not matter for the work, such as age or background.
What stays visible
The profile shows a trade, the area you want to work in, the shifts that suit you, availability, permits, length of experience and languages. These are about the work. An anonymous profile does not hide everything, and it does not guarantee that a company picks you.
When a company asks to contact you
A company can send you a contact request. You have 48 hours to accept or decline it. Only when you accept does the company see your name and contact details. The decision is always yours.
Frequently asked questions
Does an anonymous profile remove discrimination?
No. It removes the name and the photo from the first look. When you accept a contact request, the company sees your name and contact details.
Is there anonymous recruitment elsewhere?
Yes. In the public sector there is, for example, Kuntarekry and the City of Helsinki, and Työmarkkinatori offers an unnamed profile. On Emploi the profile is anonymous by default, for work in the private sector.
What do I do if I suspect I was discriminated against?
You can ask for advice from the office of the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman.
Do I have to send applications?
No. You fill in one profile. Companies find it and can ask to contact you.
